City Of Heroes Mission

Can someone explain the game “City of Heroes” and “City of Villains”?

I was reading up on it however I got very confused. It looks really fun but I can’t tell what kind of game it is. Is it a mission type game? where you complete one mission and go onto the next? Plus I don’t understand the plot. Or is this game like World of Warcraft?

City of Heroes is like a living comic book. You get to be a good guy or a bad guy. You fight enemies, earn powers as you level up, customizing your character along the way. You can take on giant monsters, super villains, or heroes if you are a villain. There are several different archetypes you can play on either side.

Heroes
Blaster – shoot enemies
Scrapper – stab/pound on enemies
Tanker – aka meat-shield, responsible for taking damage so the others can stay alive.
Controller – hold, slow, sleep, or otherwise annoy enemies so they stay put or are easier to kill
Defender – can focus on helping teammates or severely weakening enemies.
Warshade – unlockable archetype like a cross between a controller, blaster, and a tank.
Peacebringer – unlockable archetype like a cross between a scrapper, blaster, and a tank.

Villains
Stalker – sneak around and hit enemies from the shadows
Corrupter – like a blaster that can help its teammates
Brute – like a cross between a scrapper and a tank
Dominator – a controller with powerful blasts
Mastermind – leads a group of NPC characters who he/she commands and otherwise bosses around.
Villain Epic Archetypes – there are several unlockable and much more complex and customizable than the hero versions. (I don’t have a lvl 50 villain so I don’t know much about them.)

The point of all this is that while the stories don’t have a whole lot of variation, there are tons of different power sets and archetypes you can use. Each approaches the game differently and has its own strengths and weaknesses in the game.
