What is the most active/popular MMORPG at the moment? Any suggestions of what I should get into for a while?

I am interested in getting into a new MMORPG and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. What are the most active ones at the moment? If I get into a game, I would like it to last for a while. I used to play City Of Heroes about 5-6 years ago but don’t want to get into it again since their numbers are dwindling. So what would you recommend? I also don’t mind whether it is pay-to-play or free. Thanks!
World of Warcraft or Guild Wars. D&D Stormreach can be fun, and is a blend of premium and free content. Used to play City of Heroes / Villains myself; now, I’m just waiting for Star Wars: The Old Republic.
